Nearly Four Decades of Family Care

In 1987, the Dhaliwal family saw something special in a 17th-century manor house at the heart of Old Farnley village. Not just a beautiful building, but a place that could become home to people who needed warmth, dignity, and genuine belonging.

Thirty-seven years later, Manor House Residential Home remains in the same family's care. It is a rare thing in this sector: a home where continuity is not a promise on a brochure but a daily reality. Most of our carers have been with us for over fifteen years. They know every resident by name, by preference, by the small things that make a life feel like a life.

We are a relaxed home with a friendly, home-from-home atmosphere. The ethos has never changed: to provide a family environment where our residents can live an independent and dignified life, with full support whenever they need it.

— The Dhaliwal Family, CMJSD Care Ltd

The Small Things That Matter Most

At Manor House, care is not measured in policies and procedures. It is measured in the things that happen without anyone asking. The carer who notices a change in mood before the resident says a word. The member of staff who goes out for strawberries because someone fancied them and the shop was still open.

"If a resident would like strawberries, someone would go out and get them if the shop was still open."

This is a pet-friendly home. Residents are welcome to bring their companions with them — and yes, pets get their own care plans. One resident's cat arrived with him in 2017 and was given exactly that: a care plan of its own.

All meals are home-cooked using fresh ingredients, with a varied daily menu to suit all cultures and tastes. The dining room overlooks the extensive gardens, where residents enjoy afternoon teas and gentle walks through the grounds.

A Building With Stories in Its Walls

These walls have sheltered people for four hundred years. Manor House is not merely old; it is Grade II* listed, a designation given to buildings of particular importance. Only 5.8% of all listed buildings in England achieve this status.

The manor sits at the historic heart of Old Farnley, a settlement recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086, when the estates were held by Swain Fitz Alric. Over the following centuries, the land passed through some of England's notable families: the Harringtons, the Nevilles, the Brudenells, and the Danbys, who held the manor for three hundred years from 1497.

The present building dates to the 17th century and has been sensitively modernised to meet modern care standards while retaining its extraordinary character. Original stonework, period features, and the distinctive atmosphere of a building that has stood for centuries — these things cannot be replicated. They can only be preserved.

An annex provides accommodation for residents seeking greater independence, combining modern comfort with proximity to the main house and its gardens.
